What the DO did not raise is the issue whether the MDP would join in?
And why not? The MDP was formed to bring reform to the Maldives; in effect, to try and establish a proper multi-party democracy where each of us would be guaranteed our fundamental rights as human beings, not just in name but in practice as well. So far so good.
But then why should the MDP join the Republican Party's bid to bring Qasim to power when they are fielding their own candidate? Surely this is against their party ethos to support another candidate's bid? And what guarantee is there that backing Qasim would bring democracy to the Maldives?

1. The whole foundation of the MDP was laid to bring democracy to the Maldives. Our Beloved Leader and President for Life, Maumoon Abdul Gayoom is the biggest hindrance to reach this goal of establishing a democratic Maldives. People joined MDP not to bring Kenereege Mohamed Nasheed (Anni) to power. They joined because they wanted democracy established in the Maldives. Therefore Anni and the MDP owe it to its members to choose the best path to get rid of our Leader for Life. At this moment in time by joining the Qasim coalition appears to be the quickest path to get rid of Our Beloved Leader and President for Life.
2. Anni was given the mandate to run for Presidency because someone had to challenge our Beloved Leader and President for Life. People did not back Anni because they wanted him to be the President of the Maldives per se. They backed him because he was seen the most likely challenger to oust Gayoom at the time. People hoped that by backing Anni they could go for a single candidate from the National Unity Alliance (Itthihad)
3. Anni was willing to be Dr. Hassan Saeed's running mate. He said so himself. The reason he was willing to be someone's running mate appears to be because Anni himself beleived that at the time Dr. Hassan Saeed/Anni ticket would be the most sellable to the public. If there is a better option (ie Qasim/Anni ticket) then he owes it to the people of Maldives who he has been promising to bring democracy to, to follow the best option to achieve this task.
The MDP must not lose focus of their principal objective. That is to get rid of our Dear Leader for Life Maumoon. Without getting rid of him there cannot be a democratic Maldives. So even if it is backing Qasim or backing me, the Devil, the MDP owes it to the people to walk the best path to getting rid of our Leader for Life and God, Maumoon Abdul Gayoom.
If they fail to follow this and Gayoom wins the next election and democracy is waylaid for another five years, then it would be betraying the thousands of people who joined them.
Like my Kaafa said, "I did not join the MDP to bring any particular person to power. I joined the MDP in the hope of getting rid of golhaabo and hoping the Maldives would be free from this "fureytha" (His words, not mine! hehehe)

Well, Anni have tried his best to bring single candidate from Alliance by being a Running Mate of Dr. Hassan. There were no any other candidate who are willing to accept as a Running Mate. Everyone wants to be a President and some other parties in the Alliance failed the course as they did not like the Dr. Hassan and Anni partnership. Especially Umar and Ibra did not want MDP to play any major role in the Alliance. And Anni's initiation to be a Running Mate became more bitter as many top officials and activists became unhappy about Anni's idea and they themselves start moving away from the party. For the unity of the party Anni decided not to go behind anyone else. Well, MDP is the political party advocating for people's rights and reform since the beginning of reform movement. It is the first political party registered in the Maldives and formation of political parties in the Maldives was undoubtedly the result MDP's pressure and lobbying. Anni has been working for that and experienced many unfair punishments even before that. In terms of members MDP is the biggest opposition. So, why should MDP go behind a newly formed political party, why can't they come behind MDP as MDP is the most senior opposition. MDP should definitely join the Jumhooree/coalition. The ultimate target of everyone should be to defeat Gayoom, which is only possible if they join forces.
If we really evaluate the mentality of most of the Maldivians, they do not really focus on the essence of democracy. Neither they value the manifestos of any party. For them it is the person and the belief that who ever he is, control and own what ever there is of that country. With such a crude mentality prevailing among 80% of the population, Anni had the foresight to see that only a coalition of the opposition, how ever bitter the feeling is, the best option to oust the Dictator Gayyoom. Anni has the best characteristics of a People's Leader in every sense, his only opposition is the medieval belief of the Leader King which Maldivians are used to. As such, I too feel that bringing Gasim into a coalition will cement our victory over Gayyoom. MDP as a political party has the will and guts plus enough members and support to win this election fair and square.
Anni has proven that he has no hidden agenda for this campaign and his only intention is to dislodge the Dictator Gayyoom who has been and still is fleecing the total wealth of Maldives into his own pocket. I salute Anni for this. Currently Gayyoom has US$320Million in his Swiss Bank account for which Bokey Mondhood says there is no government funds in that account. He does not deny the amount nor the Account.

I don't think it'll make much difference to the state of this country whether Qasim or Gayyoom win the election this time around. If Qasim wins, all the big businesses will continue to control our wealth. The rich won't pay any taxes. The state of the schools and hospitals outside Male won't change much!
If Gayyoom wins, nothing much will change either. Sure, he cannot imprison people as he used to do. But the welfare of the people won't improve either.

WHY MDP should JOIN gaasim. MDP itself is still strong enough. Gaasim's intention is clearly visible. In his radio interview he said that he was asked by Samarey and Shukoor to go to the Jumhoori Maidan that day to send off that crowd. After all who is Gaasim to go there for that purpose. the news guy said " look u also know these are MDP addu executive committee members. but last friday afternoon anni's campaign team headed by DB Abdulla Shahid broke into addu dhaairaa office and changed the lockes and when they went there, asked members to chase them out of the office. now MDP addu dhaairaa office is run by DB Shahid. The elected executive committee members cant go in there. and they cant participate in party activities." i asked them to bring the matter to headlines. but they don wanna make it public saying they are still in MDP and they wud get justice from the party and its an internal matter.

About Jumooree Gulhun: I think no true reformist or heyo visney person or party would join them...may be Umar is the only remaining likely person...but even he has ruled it out. If anything, this Jumhooree coalition is going to be a blend of: economically right winged corporate businesses (JP, MNC?) + socially highly conservatives (AP, IDP*) + religiously backwarded auhoritarians(AP)!!! i cant imagine the outcome...

To break 30 years concrete wall, you need powerful tools. Dictator has built his empower since last 30 years. Believe me or not, no one can bring democracy while 30 years brutal dictator is on board.
