Holiday Inn at Athireege - Hypocrites or what?

All we here these days is that there is environmental damage due to deep piling at Athireege where the 15 storey Holiday Inn is at its early stage of construction. It's on TV Maldives, its on the radio, its on all the print media, its on the internet. Bloody hell! You cannot get away from it.

So what the hell is happening? Is there substantial structural damage or has this fiasco got a more sinister plot? The Environment Ministry's hell sure that there is environmental damage? If so, where is this damage? Damage to nearby buildings, whether structural or superficial, should come under the jurisdiction of the Construction Ministry, me thinks. If there is reef damage due to deep piling, then surely Environment Ministry should be able to show some sort of evidence of this instead of just saying that they do not agree with deep piling. Minister Mauroofu Jameel had said that there is no structural damage to nearby buildings. Perhaps he should have explained what he meant by structural damage and superficial damage. Almost every house in Male' near a construction site has suffered superficial damage to it. Hairline cracks of walls are not uncommon and bursting of water pipes etc is all too familiar in Male' which really is one massive construction site. Shouldn't work be halted in those construction site as well if damage is done to the house next door or does this apply only to the houses of government big shots?

My other question is where is all the media when poor peoples houses are damage? Where is Haveeru and TV Maldives? Where is Bluepeace? Where is the Environment Ministry? I have never seen a poor person being interviewed by the TV, radio or print media about damage (superficial or structural) to their property due to construction being carried by a neighbour. But now that it is the house of the Chief of Protocol, the whole media is having a field day. What fucking hypocrites!

I have also heard several versions of this sorry tale. That Sato has bought all the civil engineers of Maldives so that is why they have been silent about this issue. The other side of the story is the Chief's house has got all their windows onto the eastern side and therefore they do not want this building to go up so that is why his pal Salley of Environment Ministry is creating all the fuss. Check the photo on top. I don't particularly care which version is true or not. I am just fucking mad that we poor people get a raw deal from this government and this self-righteous media of ours while government top officials have the media licking their arses.

dude. u go and check urself the damage at dharumavantha school u go there and check urself the damage to Asters building and ADK tower. though media like TVM is giving a lot of coverage the work is still going on. its not only abt chief of protocol's house. its abt damage that could occur to the bedrock of male'. to the reef of male'. dude. despite the media coverage Sato is able to continue with the piling work. ur post is very one sided. environment ministry is not very keen to stop this work.

Anonymous..exactly my point. Asters building, ADK Tower, Dharumavantha School....all government buildings or rich peoples buildings. Dont you get it? When poor peoples houses are affected with all the building work that goes on in Male', where were you to comment? No one bloody cares. It is only when rich and powerful people's property is affected then everybody is talking about it. We are all bloody hypocrites.

Athena, you are right. Sometimes even I am shocked hehe. Good to hear from you

U r rite. When the 10 story building next to our house constructed we had damage 2. Faaru thah halaaku ve faahaana holhi ves falhain dhiya. But no one did anything.

It is only rich and powerful people veema dho everyone is talking about it. media also. Environmental disaster is only for rich people. When it affects us, then there is no environmental problems.

If it is an environmental problem then environment Ministry should show proof dho. Since this method of piling is damaging nearby buildings then there should be alternative methods used dho. People should be able to build their property without affecting other people's houses. I mean the government is building a hotel and THAT is ok for environment. hama bloddy hypocrates.

dude, u have got this ALL wrong. This is nothing to do with environment or property damage. This is an aailee mas hunigandu. This is sweka and her husband Mr.Protocol trying to stop her sister dr farahanazu faisal from building anything higher than their ganduvaru on her land. Sweka dad (farahanazu step dad) behind this. An EIA is done by environment ministry which says there is not going to be environmental damage. This is an aailee J vanee.

Otherwise who will go on tv and say I want the work to stop because I am going to Haj. Who will say that they do not want to answer the compensation offer letter because they do not like the name on the letter.

U r right on 1 thing ingey. That house has windows to eastern side. So if there is a big hotaa next to it, it will block the view

I am going to India for medical. I want the construction work next to my house to stop. Ma midhanee bogeh jahan. E waguthah ves masaiykaiy huttan jeheyne kekekeke

the athireege issue highlights the ineffectiveness and inability of the Government to address the regulatory and development issues prevalent in the country. It is the local authority Male' Municipality who issues planning permits for developments on Male'. The relevant authorities should have developed the necessary regulations, standards and procedures with responsible authorities clearly identified. construction is busy buidling harbours (no buidling code/ construction standards, environment is just all fart, more concerned about global warming and enforcing EIA regs for the sake of it, and male Municipality has no technical capability whatsoever.
so situations like this arise, no one authority really is in a position to take responsibility1 thats the way this government was designed and functions....
