If you are rich enough, you can flaunt any laws of the Maldives. Proven without a shadow of doubt by the enormous Buddha that Philip Green had requested for his birthday party.
But if you are a poor Hindu, you are not allowed to bring even a minute statue of Ram, Shiva or any other Hindu god for your own religious practice. No way. It will be confiscated and thrown into the sea.
And woe behold, if you are a Christian who dare to have a cross or a crucifix in your suitcase. Not only will it be confiscated by the customs but you will immediately be deported for being a Christian Missionary trying to convert us poor Maldivians. And if you had the misfortune of mentioning any of your local friends' names then they too will be thrown into Dhoonidhoo prison for being converts.
So there you have it. Golhaabo and his corrupt regime have shown to us Maldivians that if you are rich enough, he is quite happy to accommodate your every wish and desire, break any laws for you, as long as you throw him a few coins on your way out.
I have a Jewish classmate who is a fairly rich kid. Hmm, how much does he have to offer Golhaabo if he wants to bring his yarmulke with him?
