Buddha in the Maldives

If you are rich enough, you can flaunt any laws of the Maldives. Proven without a shadow of doubt by the enormous Buddha that Philip Green had requested for his birthday party.

But if you are a poor Hindu, you are not allowed to bring even a minute statue of Ram, Shiva or any other Hindu god for your own religious practice. No way. It will be confiscated and thrown into the sea.

And woe behold, if you are a Christian who dare to have a cross or a crucifix in your suitcase. Not only will it be confiscated by the customs but you will immediately be deported for being a Christian Missionary trying to convert us poor Maldivians. And if you had the misfortune of mentioning any of your local friends' names then they too will be thrown into Dhoonidhoo prison for being converts.

So there you have it. Golhaabo and his corrupt regime have shown to us Maldivians that if you are rich enough, he is quite happy to accommodate your every wish and desire, break any laws for you, as long as you throw him a few coins on your way out.

I have a Jewish classmate who is a fairly rich kid. Hmm, how much does he have to offer Golhaabo if he wants to bring his yarmulke with him?

Do you really think its such a big issue? Going from the way all the newspapers are covering this event and the gossip on the street u would think, that the sight of a Buddha could make us 'kafirs' overnight.Admitted Gayoom has been very hypocrite about this affair. But there really are far more pressing issues in our society than some buddha on stage. And this religion card that even those who oppose Gayoom have started playing, makes us all go down a very dangerous slope.Let Gayoom play the religion card to controll the masses, lets not stoop to his level.

It isn't the Buddha on the stage that is the underlying issue. No one in their right minds would believe that it is a Buddhist temple and we are about to become a Buddhist country overnight.

The statue is proof of how Gayoom flaunts the laws of Maldives and makes us his helpless slaves. Now that is something we all should worry about. After all he is the one who claimed "no one is above the law" but is blatantly doing so.

This has nothing to do with religion. If we cannot convert Phillip to become a muslim then let him have his Budda for his birthday. The resorts doesn't market anything "muslim" and are engaged 100% in the sale and marketting of "Haraam". What we are after is Phillip's Wallet/purse. As long as money flows, he can be near his Budda on his birthday. The government newspapers are covering it as 'JUST A STAGE' and grossly 'fail' to mention the Budda sitting on the stage.
SO FAR QAYYOOM'S 'LAADHEENEE' FATWAS HAD BECOME PERMANANT FIXTURES OF MALDIVIAN CULTURE AND RELIGION. WHAT WE HAVE TO BE AFRAID IS THAT BUDDA BECOMMING A PERMANANT FIXTURE.

i agree 100% with the maldivian devil. its not the buddha thats the issue. and it has nothing to do with religion. its how this old man can plays with the laws of this country, as if it belongs to him and his family!!
Dear MR Dicktator, U might be laughing your ass off with these matters during these days, but soon, one day sooon (insha allah) our day will come.

It is not about flouting laws. It is about having Buddha amidst us. If one truly loves Allah, one wouldn't want to see another deity brought in amongst them. The positive side is that this test shows us who really loves Allah; who is disturbed by it. Those who merely claim the love would see it simply as another opportunity to attack someone.

But no worries, Allah has said that all those statues or whatever will be destroyed. Islam shall prevail in its purest form and soon that day shall come.

Year that is true.. Budda or becoming Kafir overnight is not the issue. The issue is this one incident proves a lot. If this kind of nonsence is allowed to celebrate a rick mans b'day how many other laws have been broken so far. How many games has the axisting govenment played with the PUBLIC is quench their thirst and fill their pockets... I believe every Maldivian has a right to ask everyone concerened WHY??? I have a right n I want answers why did the govenment allow such a thing and under their own supervision? Whos responsible to break so many laws? N who is going to take the blame n responsibility?

In my opinion.
Ever since I saw this in DO I have been really wondering if this is really True could it be possible?
I checked Fact page they also did put some word out.
But hey wait just a minute. Something defiantly not right here. I am here I love this place, where I was born and am proud to be here am proud to be a Muslim. What really bothers me is that DO was the only site which has been exposing about the very deal which is still going on. Where are all those people I thought had a belief? Where are all those PARTYs which stood up for some peoples rights and cause and our ways, where are those governments SODs that kept yelling that this is 100% Muslim country yes where the Hell were you people who we elected and put in to positions in some God forsaken parliament to put OUR word out where is MDP huh where is DRP huh IDP huh where the hell is the bloody government worst where was that little SCUM deranged little prick who calls him self a leader a man for all islands ,You lot think when ever you come on TVM and give the public some rotten bullshit that we buy that HELL no .where are the students where are the scholars huh where was the Public do you not care ???? This is SHAME SHAME on ME ON US AND YOU. This is MINE and YOUR fault, this is how divided we are this is what has become of us this is what we have been made to Do. Sit here like rubber ducks and squeak all day long and gossip. That’s all to life here.
SHAME on us for letting this happen. And Mr. Green shame on you , and the next time you wanna have a party sod off some where else. Un- respectful bear- belly fat basted Piss of SOD.
Thank you

We have been doing tourism business for more than 30 years and so far we never had such a massive Statue which is exactly the ones used for warshiping. Import of such thigs are PROHIBITED in Maldives. But this time, not only the government facilitated the import but also took part in it actively by providing the service of Nation Defence Force. After all this, on the occasion of National Day, he said to the people to uphold the good faith of Islam, the tradition and culture. So, this is the extreme that a person can play FOOL.

its only a buddha statue. you lot make out like its an insult to ur religion. open ur minds. you should be able to respect other people's own views and faith. if you are that insecure about your reilgion then maybe u need to leave it.

Didn't you read what I wrote? Don't you understand English? We are talking about Golhabo breaking the law for a rich man here..not that we care whether its a statue of Budhha, or Shiva or whatever that's there. No one should be able to break the laws of this country and getaway with it.

Or perhaps you do think that Golhabo is above the law!

Very true that Gayoom is flaunting laws of Maldives. But i believe right now we are playing a very dangerous game. This goes for MDP as well. In order to beat Maumoon at his own game, we are infact promoting religious intolerance. A large portion of the population is completely paranoid at the moment, believing that foreigners have nothing better to do than plot ways to install another religion in Maldives;)
Maldivians are becoming very radical and I believe in this atmosphere its best to avoid taking potshots at even Gayoom over religious issues (specially where we promote intolerance), cause while we are busy fighting him, some radical Islamic group might step in to fill the power vacuum.
Take for example the Olympus fire, there was a screening of the ‘one minute’ films that day arranged by UNICEF, and some men outside did hurl abuse at the people leaving the theater, saying that they were bringing foreigners to spread Christianity, so the possibility exists that the fire was started because of that also.
Not to mention the big hoohaa about an article in Minivan written by Aaniya where she is supposed to have questioned the need for burugaa. She has been asked to do ‘thaubaa’ and publicly apologise. In this climate of extreme intolerance I think we should be promoting tolerance. Cause we might get gayoom out of the way, but it would be for nothing if we replace him with something far worse.

The Maldivians were all Buddhists before they became Muslims. Sad to see so much hatred for the religion and iconography of their ancestors!

While he may be breaking the laws, he is breaking a law that is not democratic. Freedom of worship should be available to every citizen in Maldives.

There's a person who has claimed these statues will be destroyed. Well not unless the people in Maldives are intolerant and bring it down. I don't see it being destroyed simply because your book says so.

Know your history people, you were once Buddhists! You shouldn't force people to stay in your faith (in Maldives' case, it's Islam), those who are not satisfied with the religion should have the freedom to convert to whatever other religion they want to.

Force is used because the president thinks it's a risk that there might be people who are not satisfied with Islam, and therefore convert.

You will never have true democracy until freedom of worship is established.
